It’s probably pretty obvious, but this building was abandoned a long time ago by the owners. Society now has two options: watch the building slowly decay and become an eyesore, or look the other way while the Downtown artists do their thing. It seems the city chose the latter instead of the former.
Good call.
The side of the building was covered with dozens of pieces, except for the area to the right where the fire escape made things difficult to get to. This probably had a sustained run before I got there, with the windows, which are now missing, probably part of the original work. This was also one of the first murals I discovered that had more than one artist on it, and the different styles between them are pretty noticeable.
I’ve heard complaints from people about how artists will tag just about anywhere at any time, but that’s something I don’t exactly buy into. I found myself particularly fascinated by this piece because of the throw up tags next to the green monster – they didn’t tag over the art, they tagged next to it, out of the way, to not disturb the harmony of the mural.
Who says artists don’t respect each other?
