014: DIOS (Salt Lake City, UT 04/19/2015)

As I began to work the room, slowly taking it all in, I realized that, right in the center of the giant pad I was standing on was a cement staircase about 8 blocks high. Suddenly, it all made sense: the second story floor would’ve had to have been ripped out for safety reasons, regardless of what the final fate of this place may have been – this wasn’t a deteriorating ceiling, it was a deteriorating floor. Or both.

The cement steps seemed to be structurally sound, so I used them to my advantage to help get a few shots of some of the great higher rise pieces I couldn’t get on the first floor.

There’s something very surreal about standing on a bunch of cement blocks with absolutely nothing underneath, and looking straight down to the ground. It’s an interesting kind of rush.

Under, through, around, and over – just one of the many dance moves urban art photography has taught me.
