316: The Gate (Las Vegas, NV 11/01/2012)

Proving once again that art knows no boundaries, this short separation between these two buildings that had been abandoned long ago were covered with small murals and quick throw up tags. Signs like “Private Property” and “Beware Of Dog” don’t seem to really deter the artists, although I’ve come to understand that the signs are for the benefit of the artists, not to put them off from painting.

When I returned a few months later, this area had been fenced off with large bits of wood, and even bigger “NO TRESPASSING” signs. Through a bit of word of mouth, I found out that some rogue taggers broke into the buildings rather than keeping the art on the outside where everyone can see.

Unfortunately, it’s that kind of behavior that starts to ruin the fun for everyone. When people think of “graffiti,” the first thing that comes up is vandalism, and this is the primary thing associated with it. Sadly, some members of the community consider that part of the thrill: “graffiti” is only considered “graffiti” if it’s defiant and disrespectful.
